It all started on Friday, 26th February 2021 when I received an email stating that my organization has booked me for a sixteen-week coaching training which commenced on Saturday, January 13th, 2021… Yes, 16 whole weeks!
I looked forward to it with a mixed feeling. Thought about how to cope with waking up early and sitting for a well-blended training session for 3 hours plus for 16 Saturdays! Jess… I screamed.
My journeys into the world of coaching kicked off on Saturday 27th February at 8:30am Nigerian time. I will never forget how I struggled with accepting my unconscious competence status in coaching. Who can relate? You know such situation when you raise your shoulder high thinking you are good at what you do without knowing you are yet to start learning…. lol.
The ICF facilitated coaching, is a blended type of training with numerous activities to ensure that the participants’ interest is high and that we look forward to the next session with heightened enthusiasm.
The first class was captivating, revealing and but also frustrating. Frustrating because I realized that my understanding of the meaning of ‘coaching’ was quite different from what it represents in reality. I have been getting it all wrong all this while! That means, I never coached anyone the right way, and all I did was a feedback or advice session!
Realizing how incompetent I was, did the magic. I quickly unlearned and started relearning, from the Internal Coaching Federation (ICF’s) ethics, coaching competences, and markers to my peer coaching sessions where I can practice all that my Coach, Malini (Coach M.) taught us in class.
Now that I know better, a lot have changed in my world ranging from how I support my friends, family members and colleagues in finding the solution to their problems themselves without my usual ‘basket of advice’ showing up. My energy is preserved as I talk less, me and my coaches find joy and fulfillment.
Before I drop the pen; please, I urge you to become part of the solution. A lot of people out there are searching for someone to share their up and downs with. In this fast-paced, busy and challenging world, be part of the solution, join the ICF team to support mankind in a journey like mine to realize and release their potentials. Let us help them to become the best they can be.
