Becoming the Ghost in the Mirror: Chronicles from the Transition
After spending over three decades in the corporate grind and the mentoring space—a world where the person with the loudest voice and the longest PowerPoint usually wins :)—I’m trying to finally shut up and become invisible. It’s been an exercise in learning the art of strategic disappearance. It’s like learning a new magic trick: vanishing like a ghost while remaining a reflection in the mirror for my client. My journey through Life Coach Certification has reinforced that coaching is often less about having the right answers and more about creating the space for clients to discover their own.
“The Ghost in the Mirror” as I’ve begun to term it.
I am trading my earlier go-to “Fixer” cape for an unblemished mirror. I am realizing that if I’m too busy trying to sound like the smartest person in the room, the client starts seeing my direction signs and loses sight of the exit sign they’ve been standing in front of for years.
The Art of the Ghostly Gap: Nurturing the Lotus in the Mud
Earlier, I used to treat silence like a mistake that needed to be corrected. Now, I see it as my most lethal gardening tool. In my first few sessions, I felt that familiar itch to jump in and rescue the client from a pause. Then, I learned to let the silence sink in.
I am observing that surface-level insights are often just like the “corporate perfume” people spray to keep things moving. It’s only when I manage to anchor myself in the quiet that the client starts digging past the rehearsed answers and into the “mud” where the real discovery lives and the “Lotus” blossoms much more beautifully.
Progress in the Presence
This hasn’t been an overnight vanishing act. I am discovering my own evolution from my first conversation to where I am presently. I still find my mind wandering sometimes distracted by the timer or “scavenging” for a similar story from my past, but I am improving at catching the drift and the key phrases coming from the client. Like many Coaching Certification Programs, the real learning has come through practice, reflection, and staying present rather than trying to perfect every conversation.
“Re-centering” and getting out of the way is still a work in progress, but simply being conscious of it is the biggest transition.
Trusting the Mud and the Lotus
My definition of trust has also undergone a cynical yet necessary upgrade :). True trust, I’ve found, is leaving the door unlocked—not because I’m sure no one will break in, but because I’m no longer afraid of an empty house. In the coaching room, I trust the client’s internal logic more than my own advice. Just like in life, I recognize trust when I stop trying to “warn” or “manage” those I love.
I am learning that to reflect both the “mud” and the “lotus” with the same polished surface while remaining invisible is the ultimate peak to conquer. These are also the qualities that are nurtured through ICF Accredited Coaching Programs, where presence and partnership are valued over providing solutions.

The Power of the “Unfinished”
I am also discovering how to be perfectly fine when a client doesn’t reach a final answer. It is their journey, not mine. When we hit a “fog,” I am learning to be okay without a full conclusion. That is the best place to check in to see if they need to reroute their inner GPS or if they are happy at the current destination.
The Resident Ghost Growing in Stature
The most “wicked” irony of this journey is how it’s changing me. 🙂 After 32 years of being the “Expert,” I’m finding a settled calm in “not knowing.” By practicing this “presently absent” state for my clients, I’ve accidentally become more present in my own skin and a much better listener at home and at work. For anyone hoping to Become a Certified Life Coach, this shift from expertise to curiosity has been, for me, the most meaningful lesson of all.
The Strategic Path Forward
I’m currently focused on perfecting this “Ghost in the Mirror” act before I scale it. My goal is to integrate these coaching modules into my mentoring assignments and collaborate with organizations to build these same competencies. My experience with Life Coach Certification has shown me that coaching creates the greatest impact when the coach steps back and the client steps forward. I guess the world now needs fewer “Lighthouses” telling people where to go and more “Mirrors” showing them where they already are :).
Ultimately, I realize I’m heading to a place where I’m barely noticed, yet significantly more effective. Because I believe now that “the best work happens in the quiet spaces I’m finally brave enough not to attempt to fill.”
