When I first started my life coach certification, I was honestly a little skeptical. I’m 19, studying psychology, and everything I had learned up to that point was rooted in therapeutic approaches. Case histories, diagnostic frameworks, structured interventions, that was the language I knew. So when I stepped into coaching, I wasn’t sure it would even work for me. It felt too open, too unstructured compared to everything I had been trained to think in.
But curiosity got the better of me. I remember sitting in my first few sessions just observing, trying to figure out where coaching fit into everything I already knew. There was no diagnosis to reach, no clinical outcome to aim for, and that unfamiliarity made me a little nervous.
As time passed though, something shifted. I started picking up competencies I didn’t expect to value as much as I do now, active listening, empathy, staying present without rushing to fix. At first these felt like techniques I was practicing. But slowly they stopped feeling like skills I was performing and started feeling like parts of who I am. That was a strange and beautiful realisation, that coaching was also shaping my character. Looking back, ICF training wasn’t just about learning coaching competencies; it was about developing the mindset and presence to truly support others.
What surprised me most was how much it made me happy. I’ve always wanted to give back to my community, and coaching gave me a way to do that which felt different from therapy, less about treating and more about walking alongside someone as they figure things out for themselves. There’s a particular kind of joy in watching someone arrive at their own insight without you having handed it to them. This experience also reinforced my aspiration to become a certified life coach who empowers others to discover their own answers.
Coaching also became a mirror for myself, which I didn’t expect. Every time I sat with a client and tried to hold space without jumping in, I learned something about my own impatience, my own instinct to fix things. It made me more aware of myself, not just as a coach but as a person. That kind of self-awareness is something I don’t think I would have developed as quickly if I had only stayed within therapeutic training. Looking back now, I realize that my life coach certification has been as much about personal growth as it has been about learning to coach.
And I think that’s the real gift of this journey. Coaching didn’t replace my interest in therapy; if anything, it enriched it. I can already see how the listening skills and the patience I’ve built here will make me a better therapist eventually, someone who doesn’t rush to interpret but knows how to sit with a person first. Pursuing an ICF coaching certification opened up a new horizon for me, broadening the way I think about helping people altogether.
I started this not knowing if it would work for me. Now I can say it didn’t just work, it became something that most evidently enriches everything else I do.
